“Ughhh!” I woke up and sat up, letting out a surprised groan at how different everything felt.
I thought the sand bed was pretty well made, but it was just a comparison to sleeping on rocks.
The difference in pressure on my body was like night and day.
I didn’t wake up in the middle of the night and greeted the morning feeling refreshed.
Civilization is really important.
“Good morning, Yuta.
You’re in a good mood,” Sylphy greeted me.
“Good morning, Sylphy.
The bedding was so comfortable, my body felt great.
It’s really nice to have a proper bed,” I replied.
“Hehe, I see.
I don’t really understand since I’m a spirit, but if it’s good for your body, then that’s great,” Sylphy chuckled.
…She’s a spirit, after all.
She said something about melting into the wind, so I can’t really relate.
“Yeah, it was great.
Speaking of which, where are Bell and the others?” I asked.
“Oh, they’re exploring outside.
They couldn’t wait for you to wake up.
I’m sorry,” Sylphy apologized.
Sylphy doesn’t need to apologize.
Well, they seemed interested in the city… and the meat yesterday.
“Hmm? Did I oversleep a bit?” I asked.
“Mm, maybe.
Breakfast time is almost over, so I was thinking of waking you up,” Sylphy said.
Oops.
I had dinner and went to bed right away yesterday, so I must have fallen asleep quickly.
I must have slept for over ten hours.
It feels refreshing.
I guess the sand bed didn’t really take all my fatigue away.
I feel light.
“It’s alright, Bell and the others should be fine.
If they don’t come back after breakfast, we can summon them,” I said to Sylphy as we headed towards the dining hall.
I rinsed my mouth a few times before going to bed last night, but I still feel like my breath smells like garlic… It’s pretty bad that I can even notice it.
I’ll rinse my mouth again just to be safe.
Etiquette is important.
“Good morning, did you sleep well?”
“Good morning, Martha-san.
I slept so soundly that I almost missed breakfast.”
“Hahaha, is that so? If you slept well, then eat up and do your best.”
She pats my back forcefully, and it kind of hurts.
She guides me to the dining hall, and we wait for the food to arrive.
Breakfast seems to be set, I wonder what we’ll be having.
“Here it is.”
Breakfast is served with a thud… it’s meat.
A piece of meat is sitting in the center of a wooden plate.
It’s a bit scary to have this much volume in the morning.
“Martha-san, what is this?”
“Oh, it’s herb-grilled rough bird.”
…It’s not really the question I wanted to ask.
I wanted to know if it’s normal to have this much volume in the morning… but I guess there’s no point in asking.
“…Thank you for the meal.”
I gave up on my question and took a bite of the meat.
If you’re an adventurer, it’s probably normal to have this much volume in the morning, I suppose.
The taste… it’s delicious.
Is the herb basil? And the garlic flavor is also strong.
Maybe this inn always serves garlic with their meat.
Torque’s restaurant is seriously dangerous.
The taste is good, though.
“How is it?”
Martha-san asks with great interest.
Maybe she’s bored since I’m the only one in the dining hall.
“It’s delicious.
The name might be different, but it has a strong basil and garlic flavor, and the meat is easy to eat thanks to the cuts.”
“Basil? Garlic?”
I guess the names are different after all.
“Oh, where I used to live, we called the leaves basil and the bulb-like thing garlic,” said Yuta.
“Wow, here on this continent, we call it basil and garlic.
So, are you from a different continent?” asked Martha.
(T/N: This will be made clear later).
“Well, something like that,” replied Yuta.
“That’s cool.
My husband loves hearing about unique recipes.
Can you tell us more about it?” Martha asked.
“I’m not a professional cook, so I can’t give you a detailed account, but if you don’t mind, I can tell you what I know.
However, I have a few things to take care of at the moment.
Can I share it with you when I have time?” Yuta replied.
“Ahaha, sure, that would be great.
Hey, come out here.
We have a customer from a different continent who can tell us about their cuisine,” Martha called out.
A burly man with a cut on his face came out of the kitchen, “What’s up, Martha?”
“This customer is from a different continent and can tell us about their cuisine,” Martha explained.
“What! That’s awesome.
Please do share your knowledge with us.
Can I get you a drink? It’s on me,” the man offered.
“You shouldn’t offer alcohol to customers so early in the morning,” Martha scolded the burly man.
“Is that so? Well then, I’ll add a beer for the customer tonight.
So, what about the cuisine from your continent?” the man chuckled.
Yuta noticed that the man opposite him was probably Torque-san, the formidable innkeeper.
Both he and his wife seemed friendly and cheerful, but not the type to listen to others.
He felt a bit uneasy.
“It’s hard to say, but I was disappointed with the grilled skewers from the street vendors.
They were cooked with wood, and I wondered why they didn’t use charcoal instead.
Grilling with charcoal alone would make a big difference,” Yuta said.
“Charcoal? You grill meat with charcoal? Does it really taste better?” Martha asked, looking skeptical.
Yuta remembered that grilling with charcoal had something to do with infrared radiation.
Maybe wood had a similar effect? He started to feel unsure.
“Well, Martha, I’m going to the blacksmith’s to get some charcoal,” the burly man said, as he got up and left the inn.
Yuta didn’t really mind the change of topic.
He just couldn’t keep up with the sudden shifts in conversation.
“Um, Martha?” Yuta called out.
“I’m sorry, the innkeeper seems to want to try grilling with charcoal.
We mainly use it at the blacksmith’s, so that’s where he’s gone,” Martha explained.
“Oh, I see.
Thank you,” Yuta said.
He realized that he had learned something new today.
He decided to get some charcoal too.
However, he wondered why charcoal was not widely accepted, while wood was.
Did he assume that wood was a common grilling fuel, without considering the possibility that it might not be?
“Martha, can even I buy charcoal?”
“Charcoal? What’s that? Is it something from your hometown?”
“Oh, no, it’s nothing.
My mistake.”
Martha looked at him like he was strange, but he realized something.
It might be due to language comprehension, but if he thought it would work, then it ends up working.
If he thought it wouldn’t work, then his words wouldn’t get through.
It was quite an amazing discovery.
As Martha continued with her small talk, he finished breakfast happily and went back to his room.
However, from now on, he would try to have meals during busy times.
Martha’s words came out so rapidly that he couldn’t get a word in.
“Bell and the others haven’t come back yet.”
“Yes, they seem to be having fun.
Should we call them back?”
“Yes.
I’m going to the adventurer’s guild now, so I’ll call them back.”
When he called Bell and the others back, they were all very excited.
It seemed like they had a lot of fun.
“Yuta, I want to eat a lot of things.”
“Were there a lot of things you wanted to try?”
“Yeah.
They looked so delicious.”
Rain, Turu, and Tamamo nodded in agreement, appealing to him.
Maybe they were exploring food shops? They had recently developed a taste for enjoying food, so they were probably interested in various things.
“After we go to the adventurer’s guild, we plan to go shopping, so why don’t we go and try to buy them later?”
“Yay!” “Kyu!” “Exciting!” “Kuu!”
Bell and the others were happy and excited, and it was heartwarming to see.
“Alright.
Then let’s go out.”
He left the key with Martha and headed to the adventurer’s guild with Bell clinging to his head, excitedly reporting about the shops they saw.
There were too many onomatopoeias (T/N: similar sounding words), so it was hard to understand, but he could tell they had a good time.
Rain and Tamamo tried to tell him as well, but he couldn’t understand their animal sounds.
Turu’s brief explanations were the easiest to understand.
As they entered the adventurer’s guild, the bustling noise suddenly died down and everyone turned to look at him.
Then, whispers started to circulate, making him feel very uncomfortable.
“Hehe.
Yuta, it seems like you’ve been given a nickname,” Sylphy said with a chuckle.
“A nickname? You mean like the special names given to famous adventurers?” he asked, wondering if he had earned a nickname after just one day.
His adventure-packed life was about to begin.
(So what’s the nickname?)
He whispered to Sylphy with excitement, but she might have been influenced by yesterday’s events, so she might not be reliable.
“Everyone’s calling you a swindler.
They say you pretended to be a spirit mage and swindled your opponent out of all their assets,” she said with a mischievous grin.
(…Sylphy, I know you know this, but that’s not a nickname, it’s slander.)
“Hehe.
You’re right.
It might just be slander,” Sylphy said, clearly amused.
“Huh? Yuta’s a bad guy? Should I beat them up?” asked Bell
“Kyyyuuu!” “Bad!” “Kuuuu!” Rain, Turu, and Tamamo chimed in.
“Hehe.
That’s right.
If you guys beat them up, you can prove that it’s not a lie,” Sylphy said with a smirk.
This was bad.
He had to stop them before things got out of hand.
He quickly called out to the eager Bell and the others.
(Everyone, please don’t attack them.
And Sylphy, please don’t provoke them.)
I tried to calm everyone down in a low voice.
I hope Sylphy won’t laugh either.
She seems to enjoy arguments, even though she really hates wars.
Is this behavior appropriate? I was fidgeting while trying to calm down Bell and the others, when Eltina noticed us and came over.
“Good morning, Yuuta.
Is there something wrong?”
“Oh, good morning Eltina.
Nothing’s wrong, I just feel a bit uncomfortable with all the attention.”
“Yesterday’s events were quite sensational, so rumors are spreading fast.
You’ll probably be in the spotlight for a while.”
Eltina explained with a wry smile.
Well, I guess there’s nothing I can do about it.
At least the infamy should reduce the annoying harassment.
I know I’m not wrong.
I used to think being a spirit magician was cool, but the reputation here is surprisingly bad.
If I had run away yesterday, my life as an adventurer would have been in jeopardy.
So there’s nothing I can do.
“Well, I guess there’s nothing we can do.
If we show our strength, there won’t be any problem.
By the way, am I going to meet the guild master?”
“Yes, that’s right.
I’ll inform him now, so please wait here for a moment.”
Eltina led me to a bench and left to report to the guild master.
Ha-ha.
I feel everyone’s eyes piercing me.
I can’t seem to find any favorable looks.
I’m clearly the heel.
Am I going to continue down this path as a villain? I wanted to be more of a baby face and have people cheer for me, but it seems difficult.
As I was escaping reality, Eltina returned.
Apparently, ready to meet the guildmaster.
He also disliked spirit magicians, so I have no idea what kind of conversation we’ll have.
I’m very anxious.
