After emitting the words “Let the game begin”, the loudspeaker fell silent.
The people in black walked backwards and out of the villa gate while holding guns toward everyone.
They were probably foreign mercenary forces; the way they moved in the Z-shaped evacuation route was very professional.
The last person who stayed was the one in command and before leaving, he arrogantly made a biubiubiu* gesture at them.

(T/N: The ‘biubiubiu’ part is on English in raw so, imagine it yourself what gesture they made)
(PR/N: I read in another novel that it’s an onomatopoeia for the sound laser guns make so I imagine just moving ‘handguns’, yk, with the index finger pointed outward and the rest curled inward.)

“You!” Fang Daichuan’s anger rose up at once and he rushed forward to fight with the offender.

The mixed-race brother grabbed him.
“Do you have a death wish?!”

Fang Daichuan caught a glimpse of the actual gun in the man’s hand, the black metal glinted with a chilling light, and the anger in his heart was instantly extinguished.
Seeing more than ten helicopters flying away, Fang Daichuan’s anger not only dissipated, but his heart also instantly became cold.

Everyone stayed in the hall and looked at each other, feeling lost.
No one knew what to do next.
The two corpses were still lying in the hall.
The girls consciously shrank into a corner of the room, trying to stay as far away from the corpses as they could.

Fang Daichuan glanced around but no one spoke, so he bit the bullet and comforted, “Don’t be afraid, there are still seven days left.
Let’s think of a way together and there will be a chance to overcome this together.”

As he said this, he couldn’t help but glance at the two corpses before turning around to reluctantly try to liven up the atmosphere.
“Let’s get to know each other first, so… how about introducing yourselves?”

“Introduce what?” The girl named Yang Song sneered.
“So that you know who’s who as you die?”

Ding Zihui stood beside her, disagreeing, “What are you talking about? Do you really want to kill someone?”

Yang Song stared at her mockingly and pointed at the two corpses.
“Have you seen what happened to those that resisted? You’ve seen it too! Do you want that to happen to you?”

“But the people with guns have gone!” Ding Zihui was incredulous, and whipped around her head to stare back at Yang Song.

Yang Song curled her mouth and said coldly, “But they will be back in seven days.
Only the winner can leave this place.”

She was right.
No one dared to refute her.
Everyone glanced at each other and fell deep into their own thoughts.

“If everyone really wants to survive,” the mixed-race brother who was sitting far away from everyone suddenly interrupted, “I have a way.”

Everyone stared at him.

“Don’t look at me like that.” The mixed-race brother was sitting at the head of the card table, busy fiddling around with the suit, and didn’t raise his head.
“I was also pitted.
We are all in the same boat and I’m just a poor man trapped in this game of death.”

He took off his suit jacket and threw it on a chair, and then pulled on the buttons of the tight-fitting waistcoat.
At the time, the weather was warm and the atmosphere was tense.
After taking off his waistcoat, Daichuan saw that his back was wet.

A middle-aged man was also sitting at the table.
He hadn’t moved at all since the first shot and he looked quite exhausted with no vigor at all.
He tilted his head to look up and stared at the mixed-race brother who was currently sitting with his leg crossed.
“Do you know any inside information? What does the person behind the scenes want?”

“What’s their intention?” Sinian raised the corners of his mouth, but he didn’t smile.”The abnormal psychology of a rich man is like how some people enjoy watching football and some enjoy watching boxing.
He likes the thrill of murder.”

Fang Daichuan left Ding Zihui who was hiding behind him, and quickly asked while taking two steps forward, “Earlier when you said there’s a way, is it true?!”

The mixed-race brother glanced at him, under the sunlight the light reflecting in his eyes looked like a layer of ice.

“This method is easy to say, but difficult to do.” The mixed-race brother played with the small box in his hand.
“What they want to see is nothing more than us taking each other out.
We just do not give them what they want.
We still have seven days.
We get familiar with this island and then set some traps.
Seven days later, when the helicopter arrives, we will fight against them.
I can fly a helicopter.
As long as we can get into China, these foreign mercenary forces can do nothing to us.”

Fang Daichuan frowned after listening to his suggestion, and asked, “What about you?”

“En?” The mixed-race brother was taken aback for a moment, staring at him suspiciously.

“Do you have Chinese nationality? Can you… can you step into China’s border?” Fang Daichuan was a little worried. Earlier the mixed-race brother said he had bad luck and got dragged into the situation.
In fact, it is hard to say that he’s really innocent.
After all, he’s colluded with foreign mercenaries, and only God knows whether he has any criminal record.

The mixed-race brother didn’t seem to have expected he would ask that question and appeared a little startled.
He looked at Fang Daichuan for a while then lowered his head and said, “You don’t have to worry about that…”

“This method is good!” Ding Zihui interrupted the conversation aloud, “Nobody has to die! What are you waiting for?! Let’s check the island tonight!”

The mixed-race brother looked around at everyone present.
Some people met his gaze and looked back at him, but some lowered their heads.

“For this method to take effect, I think it’s better for us to destroy the identity boxes together, and not open them.” The mixed-race brother smiled sardonically.
“As long as we don’t bind our fingerprints and the character card to the magnetic card and not swipe the magnetic card at the machine in the corner of the house, the system cannot determine who is who and what identity we have.
There will be no estrangement nor suspicion between us.”

A deafening silence followed.

That is impossible, Fang Daichuan felt cold. No wonder he said this method is easy to say, and difficult to put into action.
In fact, to put it bluntly, to break this game, only one thing is needed; trust.
If everyone trusts each other and agrees not to stab anyone else in the back, they can work together to live.
But even if Fang Daichuan’s IQ was low, he wasn’t so naive to believe these strangers who aren’t involved with each other in any way can have genuine trust between each other.

“Okay! Let’s destroy it together!” Ding Zihui agreed enthusiastically.
But no one paid her any mind so she turned to look around and said, “Say something!”

Of course no one spoke.

The couple glanced at each other, and seemed to have reached a tacit understanding.
The man only replied, “We need to discuss it.”

Another middle-aged man smiled, and probingly suggested, “Or, let’s open the box and take a look? We at least need to know the rules.”

“Just destroy it!” The single mother hugged her baby, she clearly just wanted to survive.
“It would be the best to survive together, who cares about the game rules.”

Yang Song pulled the corners of her mouth up to reveal a fake smile, and brazenly opened the box.

Fang Daichuan sighed.
He turned to look at the mixed-race brother who smiled coldly.

Now that someone has opened a box, everyone no longer pretended.
They opened their own character boxes one after another.
Everyone glanced around warily, each occupying a corner without getting close to one another.
Upon seeing this, the little lovers nodded to each other and pulled open the brass buttons on the box.
Fang Daichuan couldn’t help but break the brass box clasp as well.

At the top was a page of jammed manuals, everyone’s box should be similar.
Fang Daichuan closed the box and read the rules carefully.

“Game rules: Please memorize your character, and then scan your character card and fingerprints into the identity card.
After completing the above steps, it is best to destroy the character card to avoid leakage of character information.”

“From tonight onwards, whenever night falls, it is the werewolves’ time to act.
Each werewolf can use a wolf poison potion to poison a player.
The werewolves do not know each other, and the wolf venom is still effective against other werewolves.
The time the wolf venom needs to take effect is 30 minutes.
During this period, a witch can be found wandering in the woods, and within 30 minutes of being injected with wolf poison, only the witch’s antidote can cure the wolf venom.
Beside the antidote, the witch also has a bottle of poison that can kill any player.
The witch poison does not have a slow release time and takes effect immediately.”

“We remind you that both poison and antidote need to be injected into the player’s body using a needle.
The player’s strength is also a relatively important factor.
Villagers who have advantage in strength can have the opportunity to kill the werewolves.”

“There are more than thirty small wooden houses scattered across the island.
There are identification devices in the wooden houses.
The seer can use their fingerprints and their identity card to read and verify the player’s identity from the machine.
But there is only one chance every night.”

“When dawn comes, it’s the villagers’ time to act.
Every eight o’clock in the morning, all surviving players will gather in the lobby on the villa’s first floor to vote for a werewolf, and push the guillotine.
Then everyone swipes their cards in turn to identify their current roles, and Heavens will give you judgment.
As long as there is a player remaining in the opposite faction, the game will continue, until otherwise and the game is over.”

“Players who do not manage to check in before eight o’clock in the morning will be judged dead and will be disqualified from continuing the game.
Please do not oversleep.”

“Final reminder to everyone, once the game begins, there are no rules.
It can’t be stopped.
People who make it out alive can win huge rewards, while the deceased will lose everything.
Hope you all remember.
I wish you all a great game.”

There’s a smiley face at the end, a goddamn smiley face.
Fang Daichuan was irritated by the mocking smiling face.

He secretly opened the magnetic card with a character card buckled underneath.
Fang Daichuan opened it up and saw, sure enough, he has a Lucky-E constitution, if right now he was on a live broadcast, he would be able to grab a scene with this physique! Just like what he said, the remaining card left to him by others was the witch.
If he chose a card himself, he is sure would’ve gotten a villager card.

Two tubes of potions are stuck under the card with foam, one tube had a skull on top of the cork, and the other had an hourglass.
It was made out of brass, and the carvings were quite beautiful. Sure enough, it’s a madman’s design, Fang Daichuan thought.

These two tubes of potions gave him a bit of comfort.
He did not need to be a wolf to kill others.
In case someone tries to kill him, he has a chance to save himself.
The tasteless role in the eyes of others was probably Fang Daichuan’s most ideal role card.

He looked up at the mixed-race brother, trying to figure out what role he picked, but his heart was so big that he hadn’t even opened the box.

Seeing his gaze, the mixed-race brother winked at him.

Fang Daichuan asked with an expression:?

The mixed-race brother gave him a signal with his chin.

The two walked out of the villa one after the other.
Fang Daichuan followed the little brother to the beach, watching the little brother sitting on a rock by the sea and holding a glass of water.

“What are you doing?” Fang Daichuan looked at the other man warily, “It’s not dark yet.”

The little brother rolled his eyes at the sky, “It’s fine if you talk to me here.
If you talk to me inside, the wolves will immediately know you are a villager.”

Fang Daichuan was speechless, and he stammered, “I-I may also be suspicious! I deliberately disguised my identity!”

The little brother raised his eyebrows and smirked.

Fang Daichuan didn’t dare to speak anymore.
He warned himself that he should be cautious in his words and conduct, guarding against the human beings who dared to sign a contract to play this kind of game.

The mixed-race brother didn’t prod about his identity anymore, took a sip, put the cup aside, stretched out his right hand and said, “Li Sinian.”

It turned out that his surname was Li.
Was it Lee* from a foreign country or a Chinese surname?

(T/N: The Lee here is on English in raw)

Fang Daichuan also stretched out his hand and shook his dry and cold fingers slightly, “Fang Daichuan.”

The two sat side by side on the reef, not talking to each other.

So… “Why did you call me out?” Fang Daichuan asked, turning his head.

Li Sinian lazily raised a corner of his lips.
“Judging from your reaction, people can see your character card written right on your face.
If I don’t get you out, someone might talk to you and guess what card that you got.”

Fang Daichuan was touched. This person first tried to find a way to save everyone, then protected him.
No matter what his purpose was, he wasn’t a bad person.

He scratched his head.
“It’s a pity that everyone has opened their boxes.
I guess it’s impossible to go back together using your idea.
What a pity.”

Li Sinian smiled and shook his head.

“I knew it couldn’t be done.
Have you heard about the ‘Prisoner’s Dilemma’?*” Li Sinian looked up at the sky.
The sky and the sea in the distance were the same color, the horizon a strange black and blue.

Fang Daichuan shook his head.

Li Sinian explained.
“There are two criminals locked up for interrogation separately.
Assuming both sides hold their tongue and do not disclose each other, the evidence is insufficient and both sides are only sentenced to one year.
However if one tells the truth and the other conceals it, the criminal who tells the truth is acquitted and the other who conceals it is sentenced to ten years in prison.
If both expose each other, they both go to prison for eight years.
In this scenario, assuming that the two cannot communicate with each other in advance, and one of them is you, what would you choose?”

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prisoner%27s_dilemma

A strange kind of bashfulness and contemplation appeared on Fang Daichuan’s face as he thought carefully for a moment and replied truthfully, “Honestly, it depends on who I was caught with.”

Li Sinian raised his eyebrows.

Fang Daichuan explained, “If I were arrested with Xiao Zhou, I would definitely believe that she would not betray me, and she would also believe that I would not betray her.
This is very simple.
We will get sentenced to one year together.
But if I’m with smart people like you and Deng-ge, then everyone must be tacitly aware of what each other thoughts.
What I’m afraid of the most is getting locked up with someone I don’t know who might also be a jerk, so I’d prefer to be locked up with someone I know for eight years for my own security.”

“That’s why I knew it couldn’t be done.” Li Sinian smiled mockingly.
“Humans are selfish, especially when it comes to their own life and death.
Selfishness, indifference, laziness, mutual destruction, endless desires.
These are all sins everyone commits, human beings are really ugly.”

Fang Daichuan felt a little uncomfortable hearing this.
In any case, he was one of those whom the other despised and mocked, but he was more or less relieved to think the other was also an ugly human being

“Then why did you still suggest this method to everyone?” Fang Daichuan asked.

“Because I wanted to give everyone at least a chance to save themselves, and also a chance for myself.
What a pity.” Li Sinian gazed at the sea in the distance.
As night fell, the black waves danced and coiled around the shore, as if they were some kind of demonic creatures whose faces could not be seen in the darkness.

Li Sinian smiled, finished the water in the glass, got up and left.

His back seemed to be bearing a large burden, no longer as straight as before.
Halfway on the patch back, he suddenly turned around and smiled at Fang Daichuan.
“Be careful at night, don’t die on the first one.”

Fang Daichuan sat on the reef and grinned stupidly.
“That won’t happen.
I’m the protagonist and my halo is strong, even when the situation becomes critical, I will make it.
It’s you you should be worried about, someone like you who is very clever and has a backstory behind him.
In terms of cliches, you’d be the protagonist’s mentor.
And those characters have a mortality rate as high as 100% in comics so you have to be careful.”

Li Sinian’s face was turned away from the light so he couldn’t see his expression, but he seemed to be smiling at that moment.
He raised the box in his hand and shook it, then jokingly said, “Maybe I am a wolf, it is hard to say.”

“We two… must be crazy to insert so many death flags?” Fang Daichuan raised his head and laughed.
“I don’t care what you are, I still like you, I wish you luck, a safe journey, and I hope we make it back to China alive together.
When I return to China, I’ll invite you over to drink.”

Li Sinian smiled and waved his hand, and saying nothing, just turned and left.

Fang Daichuan shouted, “Hey! Your reaction is not a good sign!”

Li Sinian’s voice came from afar, holding a languid air, “You can say that when you manage to go back alive, you fool*!”
